Defeated
I am walking away with my tail between my legs on this one. Since last Friday I have been endeavoring to install SAMBA onto DeathstarII and having it working. Now installing SAMBA itself is not really that difficult, but getting SAMBA to work with a Windows2000 AD and understand Windows ACL control lists, now that is a completely different matter.
To start with I thought I would go ahead and get SAMBA 3.0 running on it, since it boasts AD integration and I have never really been that happy with the NT4.0 domain integration that was in the 2.2 series. Well by the end of the deal I was wishing for the integration that 2.2 had. It took forever to get 3.0 to work correctly, partially because I missed a section of the docs, partially because stuff just isn’t right in it. It is almost like the SAMBA team has left the idea of letting Linux server out files with Windows and moved on to making Linux be a PDC for a Windows domain. That seems to be their biggest goal in life now.
Once I got it to connect correctly I needed to recompile it for ACL support. Well doing that ended up not giving me ADS support. After several tries and lots of recompiles, I gave up on it. Their rpm building system is screwed up and wouldn’t produce a correct rpm (IMO).
So I dropped back to 2.2.8a only to find that I also couldn’t compile ACL support into it and that it had trouble accepting logins from different computers, depending on if they used the netbios name or the IP. So I said fuck it and am currently installing 2000 server on it. I need this to work, and I don’t have time to screw around with the samba developers while they try and get their shit together. It is no wonder people think Linux is such a joke, one of the biggest projects that we have in our camp, can’t even get it right. Grrr…….

SCO vs. IBM
Orginal thread from my old forum
This is an interesting court case, and it is only made more interesting by trying to guess what is going on in SCO’s offices. Here is my latest atttempt, which was spurred by this qoute:
A SCO Suit wrote:
SCO spokesman Blake Stowell says his company’s lawsuit will not put an end to Linux.
“Linux could still be used; it just wouldn’t be free,” Stowell said. “These people are upset because they’ve been enjoying a free ride for some time. They’re upset their free ride will potentially be gone.”
This coupled with the fact that SCO seems to not want to let anyone see the code and continue to work on Linux leads me to this:
SCO wants to be able to License Linux.
Here is how I see it going down, if SCO gets what they want:
SCO goes to court and wins that it is their code in the Linux kernel. They then get the judge to seal the court docs and evidence. Now no one that works on the kernel can see the code considered SCO’s and so they cannot remove it from the kernel. Their choices are either to rewrite entire sections of the kernel, or give up. SCO takes the body of the kernel and since no one can use it without using their code they sell licenses to use their code in Linux, effectively licensing Linux. SCO effectively garners an entire OS/kernel which has already outshined and beaten their work, which they control.
If this is true they are using IP rights to work around the GPL and turn it into something more BSD License like. They would practically be doing something like Mac OS X, in that they would be taking a large body of other peoples work and tacking a couple things on top and selling it. The difference is that there would be no “regular BSD” for Linux since all kernels would contain the “SCO Code” or be missing large chunks of the kernel.
This is very not good. Of course it all hinges upon SCO winning their court case, which I do not think is going to happen.

Metallica
Original thread on my old forum
Arrrggghhhh will the pain never cease…. How can a group that was so anti-establishment, be so establishment?
Metallica, the once great band who enjoyed bootlegges of their concerts and such and made decent music, slid down the slippery slope of being rich. After alienating a huge part of their fan base, when they found their new records weren’t selling and blamed it on filesharing, they have came back with a new CD and offered “Free Extra Metallica Stuff Online”. Sorry folks, if you piss of the people that feed you and then offer them some more of your new crappy music online, don’t expect them to welcome you back.
They are all about hyping their new album, St. Anger. A complete DVD of watching them stink up the room while making it is included… OOHHHH No thanks. If I decide that I want to have the cd for some odd reason, I’ll just pirate it off of the many napster clones for free. At least that way I will feel like I am getting my money’s worth.

Radio SUCKS!!!!!!
Original post from my old forum
OMG!!!!!! I cannot stand it anymore. If it wasn’t for bad rock and roll stations in BG there wouldn’t be one at all. I get so tired of flipping through my presets to here the same song on three different stations. Often times they are in the same place in the song. It is ridiculous. Sometimes they aren’t even “new” songs. I mean last week three stations had Nirvana, “Smells like Teen Spirit” on at the same time, then a fourth one played it like 10 minutes later. There is no way, without some kind of driving force four radio stations could play the same song like that. Ridiculous.
And have you heard that new Metallica song? My god how could you not have, they play it every 35 minutes. It would be different if it was good, but it sucks golf balls. Add into that they fact that they all take commercials at the same time and it makes me want to tear the radio antenna off of my car.
RIAA, and ClearChannel, bringing you the best crap that money can buy. Too bad it isn’t worth a damn as music. No wonder record sales are down.

Toots, Triumph, Coach!!!
Original thread on my old forums
What a Combo. Took the triumph over to Coach’s house today after work and spent some time with him. We headed out to Toots, with more than a few sideways glances, and preceeded to goof off out there. After some great food, and some beer, we headed back to his house for a bit and talked. Great times. Almost makes me wish I had never turned down the $5.25 he was paying me for working for him. They enjoyment was great pay. Coach and his wife are kinda like a third set of grandparents or something. I am not really sure how to classify them. They are like friends, but since they are older, wiser, and have grandchildren, it is kinda different. Like I said, not sure how to classify them, other than in F for Fun.

New Play Area!!!::New Play Area!!!::Well since traffic has died off here some, I thought I would build a new ball pit for you guys to play in. It has some areas that you might enjoy and some you might not. Honestly, there are probably too many boards in the web, but I guess I want to try my hardest to be a Lamer.
Here is the link http://news.brentnorris.net/forums/
I am not sure if it will become a replacement for this, or an add on, or a blah or a blah blah. I really like some of the features of this setup, but some of the other stuff is nice as well. For now most posts by me will be duplicated between the two. I hope to see some people join up and tell your friends about it, since I am always open to more people showing up to parties.
It is still a work in progress as well, so hopefully it will get better and better.

Happy Happy.. Happy Birthday!!!
No not mine, but Pauline’s. Her birthday was yesterday and to celebrate we took the day off and headed to Opry Mills. Her sister and boyfriend went with us as well. We had a good time, though there are far too many shops in that mall that don’t have electronic items in them. What would anyone need with so many shoes?!!?
Anyway, we had lunch at Chili’s and spent about an hour in Jillians. Jillians is pretty much one of the last decent arcades that I have seen, though they have precious few, normal arcade cabinets. Almost all the games there are drive something, or shoot something type games. There is one Starwars Episode I pinball machine there which is pretty cool and of course skee ball, air hockey and its ilk. While there I took a dance with my new current favorite game (no not dance dance revolution), Police 911. Awesome!!!! It is the first game I have played that seriously gave you a workout. It is a far cry from the old powerpad days of the Nintendo. This game is extremely bad ass. Here is a link. Feel free to start a collection to purchase one for me. Seriously.
Anyway after that we headed to the theater and saw Bruce Almighty. A pretty good movie, that is extremely funny at the beginning. Toward the end it sort of becomes more serious and tries to make a point, but it still has its funny moments then as well.
Headed out of the theater and stopped at a Cosmic Putt Putt place and played a round. I won just beating Beth by one point. Woohooo!! Yay for me.
Pauline and Beth wanted to get Ice Cream at this shop there. So we stopped and did that. It really wasn’t that great in my opinion and it certainly did cost a bit of money for it. I think Pauline felt the same way since she mentioned that for they price they were going to have to clean up the table, not us.
Headed back out into the mall for even more shopping. Man I didn’t know their could be so many clothing stores!!!
Its cool though, because I know Pauline was having a good time and James isn’t a bad guy to have to talk to once he gets used to you.
I ended up stopping at an EBStores that was near our exit and finding a copy of MechCommander 2 for $5. I also sort of tricked the lady at the cash register, unintentionally and got a $30 game for $10. I think it is something like Command and Conquer, but set a little differently. It reminded me of a game I saw Dad playing a lot a while ago, so I thought I might pick it up and see if he like it for Father’s day. Probably won’t, but hey for $10 I ain’t losing much and if he does that would be pretty cool.
Finally got out of the mall at around 8:30 after we had gotten there about 10:30 that morning. On the way home we somehow got to talking about card games and Pauline and James both stated that they would never play “Speed” with Beth ever again. Speed was a huge game in my middle school and I said I would play her. So then we started talking about euchre and I starting trying to tell them how to play. As a result once we got to Paulines house I played a couple rounds of speed with Beth and then we played a hand of eukre. I headed for home and called it a night after that. I hope it was a good day for Pauline. She seemed to act like it was. I guess I could let her post her comments for herself though when she reads this.

Computer Liquidators
This is the company that I bought Mirage from. Just got word from Ebay that they have been removed from the site and are currently being prosecuted for taking people’s money and not given them the merchandise. Mostly on laptops.
Ouch…. Interestingly, I did my research on this one, at least as best I thought I could. They had over 500 positive feedbacks. Only 3 negative at the time. One of the negatives was that Toshiba said they were a scam. Searching Toshiba’s site revealed nothing. Reading back through the comments revealed that he has disgruntled over his deal. So I bought my laptop and luckly I got my laptop. Sounds like about right after that they went sour. I got kinda a bad vibe from them while I was waiting for Mirage, and I decided I didn’t really want to do business with them anymore. Perhaps this is what I was feeling? I guess there is even a internet group started to fight against them. Don’t know what to say other than…. WOW.
Guess I kinda dodged a bullet on that one. Kinda reminds me of Police 911….. mmmmm…yum……. oh sorry…. meant to end this post….**click**
